Sansevieria | Indoor Plant Spotlight

Have you heard of Sansevieria? It's genus that belongs to the Asparagaceae family. Let's stop making things complicated with this scientific terms.

We commonly call them SNAKE PLANTS and nope, it doesn't bite! Snake plants is one of the most effective air purifier, removing toxins such as formaldehyde in your household.


It's a very house friendly plant because of its durability. It doesn't have light issues, caring and maintenance problems, it's really hard to kill it.


If you are a really busy person but you still want to make your home beautiful with plants as a decoration, SANSEVIERIA is the perfect plant for you.


If you think you haven't seen it, that would be very impossible. It's the plant has rigid and thick leaves.

 

Fun Fact: Did you know that the fibers of its leaf is super thick that it is used to make bow strings in the old days? Yepp! now you know!

 

There are different kinds of Sansevieria:

Sansevieria ‘Golden Hahnii’

The special thing about this is it's short leaves with yellow outline.

Sansevieria cylindrical

This kind of snake plant has cylindrical, dark green and striped leaves. It's usual height is 2 ft.

Sansevieria trifasciata

This has twisted leaves, striped horizontally, and yellow edges. It grows up to 14 inches tall.

Sansevieria desertii

This one is a feet tall with succulent red colored leaves.

Sansevieria trifasciata

This plants grow to around 3 foot tall and has narrow leaves with white vertical stripes.

 

Indoor Plant Care tips:

Positioning: This plant doesn't like direct light from the sun, but it prefers very luminous places. During winter it must be positioned away from direct heat sources, radiators, stoves, fireplaces, but also from split air conditioners.


Temperature: It's an easy care plant. It doesn't have problems with high temperature, but low temperature can become harmful. During summer, it can tollerate even 30°C. During winter, the good temperature to maintain this plant at its best is not below 10°C.

Watering: Sansevieria can be treated as a succulent. In hot weather, the plant must be watered every 15 days if it is indoors and only if the soil is dry to the touch. If it is placed outside it must be watered every 2-3 days. In winter, just water it once a month.

Propagation: There is no precise rule. It is necessary to do repotting when the vase becomes small to contain the plant. Sansevieria has a slow growth. Sometimes, even years can pass, so that it becomes necessary to repot.


To repot, you need to usegarden soil, peat and coarse sand. It is necessary that it is draining and porous, so that water does not form which could cause root rot rhizome. In the period in which the repotting is not done it is advisable to replace a few centimeters of superficial soil with new soil.
